What does the RS stand for on a Porsche 911 GT3? ›

RS is short for 'rennsport', which means racing in German. The Porsche RS story started back in 1957 when the name was applied to the 718 RSK race car, six years before the first 911 was even launched.

Flat out, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS managed to reach 190 mph (305 km/h), which is actually a tad higher than the official top speed of 184 mph (296 km/h). However, modern speedometers tend to show a slightly higher speed than the real one.

For 20 years now, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS has been the track-focused super sports car to beat. Since 2003 it's been less crazy expensive (at list price) than the Ferrari equivalent, lighter than the BMW M track cars, faster than anything Aston has conjured up… it's little wonder they've become so revered.

“In the back section of the circuit, the GT3 RS comes into its own and it must be, I guess, 20-25 kph faster than the GT2 RS in the long D and the fast corners. That's why you gain a lot of time. It's a track weapon, fantastic to drive. I'm a big Porsche fan, they've done a great job with this car,” said Karthikeyan.

Whether it's an older model or a more recent release, the 911 is considered highly collectable. Buying a new 911, such as the GT3 RS, is, therefore, a good investment.

It's not intended for everyday use, it's intended for B road blasts and track days, but you could of course use one every day. I used an Elise as my only car every day for 4 happy years and loved every mile, and a GT3 is more practical than that and with lower NVH.

Every now and again a sports car manufacturer builds a model so hard-edged and uncompromising that it seems to have shaken off its race-car war paint at the end of pit lane and escaped to the street. Porsche's GT3 RS is exactly that sort of machine.

The GT3 offers both a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (a.k.a. PDK) or a six-speed manual. The PDK-equipped example we drove showcased the automatic's intuitive behavior as well as the engine's spirited responses and intoxicating soundtrack.
