I haven't seen a proper guide to mods recently, so I decided I might as well make one.
All of these mods will be for Forge 1.8.9.
For higher game versions, see [tbd]

Getting started
If you already have a forge profile setup, you can skip this step.
Note - this will not work with clients like badlion or lunar
If you're using the vanilla launcher: [VIDEO]
If you're looking for a launcher to use, I'd recommend using either Prism or MultiMC
Both of these launchers offer separation of various game instances, allow you to easily manage mods and other aspects of the game, as well as handling the installation of forge for you.
Prism also offers the additional functionality of providing mod downloads. See their websites below to see a full list of features.
Once you have forge installed, you can move on to the text step: Mods!
Mods
When downloading mods, always get them from the official source.

Mods will be sorted into three main categories
Essential Mods – these are mods you should have regardless
Optional Mods – mods that you don’t need, but are recommended
Misc Mods – mods that you may or may not want to use
The download links given should be the correct ones, but always double check.
Essential Mods
Optifine: The performance mod for 1.8.9
This mod offers a massive boost in frames, much more customizable video settings, a zoom key, a performance graph, and much more
Several other mods will also require optifine to work properly.
Patcher: The other mod that you really should have for 1.8.9
This mod also offers a large frame boost, hundreds of bug and crash fixes, 1.12.2 crop hitboxes, adjustable zoom, and dozens of optimisations.
Note : This mod will install essentials, as it is required for it to run. You can see what essentials is here: https://essential.gg/
ToggleSprint: I don’t know how you live without this
This mod offers one thing, and one thing only: Toggleable sprinting.
There are many different mods that you can use for this feature, but the linked one is the one I use personally.
Note – if you do not use Dulkir, you may want to use scrollable tooltips
Skyblock Mods
Everything you’ll need for Skyblock, sorted in a vague order.
Skytils: In my opinion, the skyblock mod
This mod offers a lot of features. Some key highlights: solvers for dungeons, slayer features, dungeon map, score calculator, spam hiders, aliases, synced crystal hollows waypoints and a map.
If you’re running a potato, this is the one mod I’d recommend getting.

NotEnoughUpdates (NEU): A lot of QoL features for skyblock
This is a vast mod – main features include: Custom GUIs for just about everything, in game profile viewer, fairy soul waypoints, slot locking and binding
NEU is currently required in order to use SkyHanni.
SkyblockAddons (SBA): HUD customisation
This mod is no longer updated by the original developer, so it may be buggy at times. This mod offers HUD elements for pretty much everything, notably health and mana bars, and custom enchants.

SkyHanni: This mod is updated very frequently, so if you need a feature, it’ll probably be in here. This mod required NEU to work.
SkyHanni has an uncountable amount of features. Key highlights: Chocolate factory helper, rift features.

Chattriggers: Allows for modules to downloaded on the fly. This may cause lag.

Desco's Watersolver: A standalone one flow water solver.
Bingo Brewers: Various bingo-specific features, as well as splash pings.
Misc Mods
A collection of miscellaneous mods that offer specific features
Scrollable Tooltips: Allows you to scroll through tooltips in case they go offscreen
Block Overlay: Allows you to change the vanilla block overlay
ChatCalc: Allows math in chat to be autocompleted with tab
Foamfix: Small game improvements
CrashPatch: Prevents your game from fully closing after a crash
Redaction: Various vanilla customisation features, including the hitbox and hotbar.
Timechanger: Allows you to change the client side ingame time to any value
Overflow Animations: Get rid of those clunky 1.8.9 animations.
Anyways, that’s all of the mods that I can think of for now. If I’ve missed any, reply to it with the mod and what its for and I’ll consider adding it.
