What is an Instant Pot?

Haven’t jumped on the Instant Pot bandwagon yet? Well, you may want to consider it just for this recipe alone!

Instant Pot is a seven-in-one multi-cooker that works as an electric pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, yogurt maker, steamer, warmer, and sauté pan all in one.

Sounds a little too good to be true, but we promise it’s worth every penny! I haven’t used my slow cooker in weeks, which is saying a lot for this 3-4 times a week slow cooking girl!

Check out the reviews on the Instant Pot on Amazon and join the 1000’s of people who LOVE it! You can read about it HERE.

How to Make the perfect Italian Beef Roast in your instant pot:

  1. Season your roast with desired flavor. We’re using a mix of Italian dressing, gravy mix, and ranch dressing mix to give this roast the ultimate flavor! We’ll also use some salt and pepper.
  2. Pour 1-2 Tablespoons of olive oil in the bottom of your Instant Pot and turn on the “saute” feature. Saute your roast on all sides for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until browned.
  3. Pour in 1 cup of beef broth and set Instant Pot to HIGH pressure. Set your knob to sealing and the timer to 60 minutes.
  4. Let your roast come to pressure and cook for 60 minutes. Then do a natural release for 10 minutes, followed by a quick release.
  5. Remove your roast and slice or shred with forks or these Meat Shredder Claws.

How to turn this into a freezer meal:

Place roast, dry onion soup mix, brown gravy mix, Italian dressing mix, and salt and pepper into a gallon-sized freezer bag. Place freezer bag into freezer and it will last up to 60 days.

When ready to use, dump ingredients from bag into Instant Pot and add 1 1/2 cups of beef broth in with the frozen food. Place the lid on top, move the valve to SEALING, and press the MANUAL button. Set timer for 90 minutes (or 30 minutes per pound of your roast). Do a NATURAL RELEASE when the timer is done – I even like to let it sit in the Instant Pot for a few hours so that it falls apart so easily. Follow the rest of the instructions as written.

  1. Lori says:

I made this using the ranch, low sodium brown gravy and Italian packets and it was really good. Next time I will do the natural release. I didn’t have beef broth so I used 2 cups of water. I also browned it in olive oil on both sides first. Family loved it!

  2. Stacy says:

Made this for dinner tonight. So easy, and the most tasty, flavorful roast I've ever made. We'll have this again and again.

  3. Andrea says:

Would this work as a freezer meal?

  4. Cyd says:

We usually post a video that is a different recipe so you have lots of options to choose from. They are both amazing!

  5. Brooke Dingledine says:

Do you typically trim the fat from your roast before you make it! The picture doesn’t show much fat on the meat

  6. Cyd says:

It you have a lot of fat on the outside you could trim it off. Ours didn't have a lot. You can really use any cut of roast beef. We will often buy what is on sale.

  7. Ashley says:

Do you cook the carrots at the same time? Or were those cooked separately?

  8. Cyd says:

We cooked them separately. The cooking time for the roast would be too long for the carrots. But you could do the veggies right after, they go pretty fast.

  9. Candy says:

How long did you cook the carrots for? Sorry, I'm brand new to instant pot and am a horrible cook, I'm almost going blind, haha.

  10. Cyd says:

Hi Candy. Here is a link for simple instant pot carrots. https://pipingpotcurry.com/steamed-carrots-instant-pot/

  11. Janie says:

Can you do this recipe with frozen meat?

  12. Caitie says:

Yes and no, I cooked it once frozen it wasn't the same. You can mix it freeze it together and thaw it the night before.

  13. N. Garcia says:

I don't have time to thaw the roast so do I have to add time to the cooking process or leave it the same?

  14. Cyd Adamson says:

Cook for 90 minutes if roast is frozen.

  15. Garland Dunbar says:

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I'll just sum it up what I had written and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I'm still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips for newbie blog writers? I'd genuinely appreciate it.

  17. kerrie says:

i could only use your recipe as a guide because i could not get most of the ingredients in australia

  18. Krystal Clark says:

Can I convert this into a crockpot recipe?

  19. Momma Cyd says:

Yes, this should be an easy recipe to cook all day in your slow cooker - low and slow and it would be delicious!

  20. Summer says:

I froze with the dry seasoning only and added the broth when I stuck it in the slow cooker. Absolutely delicious. I added veggies too. Next time I'm adding carrots, celery, and potatoes.

  21. Zach says:

I quartered smaller yellow and red potatoes and placed on top. The roast was wonderful but the potatoes were truly the best I've ever had. So flavorful!

  22. Katrina Jones says:

If I wanted to cook carrots, potatoes, and celery afterwards, what time would I use??

  23. Momma Cyd says:

Add them after your roast has cooked. You can cook them for about 3 minutes and they'll turn out perfect.

FAQs

What is the difference between roast beef and Italian roast beef? ›

While many different meat cuts make for a great roast beef sandwich, the leaner cuts, like top loin or round roast are the most common. On the other hand, Italian beef is typically made with chuck roast, the classic pot roast cut full of rich marbling fats.

Why is my pot roast still tough in the Instant Pot? ›

If it's still tough, you will need to cook it longer. The pressure cooking process breaks down tough meat, making it tender. Put the lid back on, seal the pressure cooker, and cook at high pressure for another 10 to 20 minutes.

Is Instant Pot pot roast as good as slow cooker? ›

We found Instant Pot multicookers specifically could not successfully slow-cook dense, high-volume recipes such as beef stew or pot roast. Beef was still chewy after 14 hours because the machine didn't have enough power to fully break it down.

Can you overcook a roast in the Instant Pot? ›

If your roast is tough in the Instant Pot, it likely needs to be cooked longer. Chuck roast will become more tender the longer it cooks, so extra time may be needed. However, you can overcook beef in the Instant Pot, so keep an eye on it if you add extra time.

Which is better French roast or Italian roast? ›

Italian Roast coffee is ideal for espresso lovers because the heavy body and intense flavor complement the creaminess of dairy-topped espresso beverages. On the other hand, French Roast coffee is ideal for many different brewing methods, including drip, French press, or Moka pot.

Is Italian roast better than French roast? ›

A significant difference between these roasts lies within their flavor profiles: French roast has a more intense and smoky taste with a thinner body. Italian roast maintains bolder flavor and thicker texture. Espresso roast emphasizes balance and full-body, suitable for espresso brewing.

How much liquid to add to Instant Pot for roast? ›

The Instant Pot won't come to pressure without a bit of liquid. We found 1 cup was just enough to avoid stewing the beef. Don't throw out the sauce at the end. It's amped up with flavor from cooking with the beef and is absolutely decadent spooned over medium-rare slices.

How long does it take to cook 2 pounds of beef in the Instant Pot? ›

Place the frozen beef roast, salt, pepper, garlic, and onion powder inside the pressure cooker. Pour in beef stock around the roast, then top the roast with horseradish. Cook on high pressure for 30 minutes per pound.

Is it better to slow cook or pressure cook a beef roast? ›

Taste: For overall taste, the pressure cooker was the hands-down winner. Beef, carrots, and potatoes all retained their rich flavors. After 8 hours in the slow cooker, they emerged bland and seemed to need salt.

Does roast need to be submerged in Instant Pot? ›

No, because there is little to no evaporation of the cooking liquid when cooking in the instant pot, a roast does not need to be completely submerged. This recipe contains a bit of red wine, Worcestershire sauce, and olive oil, which is plenty of liquid.

Why is my Instant Pot roast not tender? ›

If you find that it's still tough after cooking, you'll need to cook it for another 10 to 20 minutes at high pressure – it just needs a bit longer to continue to brine and break down the connective tissue.

Can I leave a roast in the Instant Pot overnight? ›

Can You Leave Instant Pot On Overnight? The short answer is yes.

Should roast be covered with liquid in pressure cooker? ›

While you may cover meat almost completely for a conventional braise, use just enough liquid for the cooker to reach pressure – during pressure cooking the meat will release it's own juice and braise in that flavorful liquid, instead.

How do you keep meat moist in a pressure cooker? ›

Brown the meat: Brown the meat in a pan before cooking it in the pressure cooker to add flavor and help to tenderize the meat. Use a liquid: Cook the meat in a liquid, such as broth or wine, to help keep it moist and tender.

What makes Italian beef different? ›

An Italian beef is a sandwich originating from Chicago made from thin slices of roast beef simmered and served au jus on French bread. Common toppings are a choice between spicy giardiniera (called "hot") or mild bell peppers (called "sweet").

Is Italian beef just roast beef? ›

That might sound like a pretty standard roast beef to you, but there's one key differentiator that plays an indispensable role in making the Italian beef what it is: juice. Specifically, the juice (or gravy) that accumulates when the fatty content of that sirloin tip or top round melts away during the roasting process.

What's the difference between beef and Italian beef? ›

One of the distinguishing features of Italian beef is the Italian seasoning and spices that infuses the meat with its distinctive flavor. The beef is generously seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices, such as garlic, oregano, black pepper, and often a hint of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat.

What is the difference between a roast beef sandwich and an Italian beef sandwich? ›

The toppings differ as well; a deli roast beef sandwich can be filled with almost anything, but Italian beef sandwiches are always topped with provolone cheese and Giardiniera.
