What is a Skin Tag?
A skin tag is a small, noncancerous growth that forms when the skin rubs against itself. While some skin tags may not require treatment, they can be removed if they are bothersome. Skin tags are the same color as your skin and often appear as a small cluster of skin tissue extending from a tiny stem. They are common, as about half of all adults will have at least one skin tag in their lifetime.
Skin tags most often appear in areas where the skin rubs against itself, such as the eyelids, armpits, groin or thighs, neck, under the breasts, and genitals.
Please note that a skin tag may also appear very similar to a different type of skin growth. If you notice any type of fleshy growth that varies in color, size, or shape, seek guidance from a board-certified provider.

What to Expect During Skin Tag Removal
There are several methods of removing a skin tag. Treatment is typically an in-office, outpatient procedure and may include the following:
Cryosurgery: A small amount of liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the skin tag, freezing off the growth.
Cauterization: Heat is used to remove the skin tag.
Electrocautery: A specialized electric current is used to remove the skin tag.
Ligation: Some skin tags may be removed by cutting off the blood flow with a surgical thread.
Surgery: This process involves the removal of a skin tag with surgical scissors. The size and location of the skin tag will determine if bandages or stitches are needed.
Skin Tag Removal Recovery and Result
There is rarely downtime required following skin tag removal, and complication rates are low. Rarely do patients develop a small scar, which will disappear over time. Our team will provide you with specific aftercare instructions, which may involve applying an antibiotic ointment to the affected area. For patients undergoing a surgical procedure, they should also keep the wound dry for at least 48 hours before gently washing the area with soap and water. Dr. Rod may schedule a follow-up appointment to remove any stitches (if they were placed).
